Guide to Successful Poker Playing For Beginners

When starting out playing Poker, often players will have a hard time adjusting to the game and find themselves out of pocket on more than one occasion. However, if you follow the three simple tips presented here, you'll be on the road to success in no time. These three core Poker skills are; mathematics, discipline, and psychology. Mastering these skills will mean you'll be able to read game situations and be able to capitalise on those moments that would have otherwise passed you by.

The first skill that needs to be mastered is basic mathematics. A solid Poker player will know the probabilities within the game, and of specific card matchups. Along with all other card games Poker is based largely on statistics and probabilities. Knowing when to fold and call the bet becomes second nature when understanding the probability behind hitting the flush or river card. Poor poker players disregard this aspect of the game, and thus suffer the consequences. Don't be one of these players and make sure you understand the probabilities and thrive under it.

The second skill you should be focusing on is discipline. Poker is a game of great patience and for that patience you need strong discipline. Don't play loose and take unnecessary gambles when the situation does not warrant it. A disciplined player understands when to play or when to fold their cards; they build an understanding of the game and only play when they have the advantage.

Last but most definitely not least is psychology. Reading your opponents and predicting their next moves is arguably the most important of all skills. Understanding what opposing players have in their hands, what they think you have, and what they think you think they have. Accurately predicting these three can give you a massive advantage over the other players. This is even more important in no-limit games to limit games, as bluffing is more prevalent.

Consider these three key poker skills and build upon them to really impress your friends at the next poker night. Start bossing games and building sizeable pot leads, which will in turn give you more experience to improve upon. Hopefully this article has provided you with the necessary information to further your game and most of all enjoy yourself!

Winning Omaha Poker Playing Strategy

When you are playing an Omaha high-low game you must keep in mind that you have to win the whole pot by winning as well the high as the low. Some players play to win something and this way they don't get the whole bid, they split it with other players at the table and this should not be your goal because you might end up losing more money than you actually win. Winning both the high and the low will have to make you very selective with the hands you play firstly and with the cards you still keep playing after the flop.

Select the hands that you play and never start playing with a hand that is too risky and with low winning odds. If you however spot a hand that is likely to scoop the pot, they you should definitely play it no matter the risks. Also first you have to select the table you will play in. Play only tables that are loose, where one or more weak players are present or at least tables that rank below your average Poker table. Calculate the pot odds frequently and see if a call is necessary or not.

Raising before the flop should be done very rarely if not never. It is risky and this is not a game of risks. Remembering that you have to scoop the flop will keep you from doing this bet unless you are absolutely sure is will bring you the entire pot. If your flop is good however, then start an aggressive playing manner and give it everything you have (not money but Poker skills).

Once you find yourself on the flop you can see enough cards to realize whether you are going to win both the high and the low. You must be ready to fold here whenever necessary.

Bluffing in an Omaha high-low game should be done rarely and only sometimes on the river only if you don't see any low hands out.
You can play average starting hands when you are in late position and more players have already called.

Some things that are considered mistakes and you should never do in this game are the following:

- Too many hands played.

- Going through with it when the hand only has a potential for either the high or the low.

- Raising in flop with a good hand will make others fold and the pot won't be as big as expected.

- Raising the flop when you have a low or high hand and the cards drawn are the exact opposite of your hand.

Tips for Playing Better Poker

Poker has been gaining such popularity lately that many people are looking for the secrets of the pros to help them play a better game. Countless books and shows and web pages have been created to help people play better Poker.

Whether you are playing at the Casino or in a regular weekly game, you want to know the techniques that will make your game that much better.

There is one secret of the pros that is important for every poker player to know. It doesn't matter if you're playing Texas hold em' on a televised celebrity match, or seven card stud in the Casino, or five card draw with a bunch of buddies at your house. This is one of the main secrets that pros use:

· "Play tight."

The term "playing tight" means that you should fold bad hands quickly and aggressively play good hands. If you have a bad hand, get out early. Don't try to wait it out and hope that the cards will turn your way. They rarely do. However, if you have a good hand, stay in and bet high. Your high bets will drive out the weaker players and still raise the pot to make up for the small losses that chipped away at your pile of cash through the evening. In fact, a good player may only play a couple hands in an entire evening, but if they play tight they can still win.

So what is a good hand and what are other ways to help you play tight poker? It depends on the game you're playing. Here are some suggestions, although these are just guidelines and not everyone will agree.

· If you are playing Texas Hold 'em, stay in if you are dealt a good black jack hand on your two down. If not, get out.

· If you are playing five card stud, stay in if you are dealt a pair. You may want to stay in if you are dealt an Ace, but you're taking a risk. Otherwise, get out.

· No matter how tempting it is, don't hold out for a straight! If you're trying to build a straight, fold because the chances are slim.

· If you are playing draw poker, keep the required amount plus a "kicker" card, which will throw off your opponents as to what you have. And you'll be surprised at how often that kicker will help you win the pot.

· Don't bluff. If you are great at bluffing, you may want to do it occasionally, but most people are terrible at it. What's more, in many friendly games, people will pay to see if you're bluffing because the stakes are low, so if you gain a reputation for never bluffing you will also gain a reputation for going big only when you have a good hand.

Playing Poker Freeroll Tournaments

Freeroll tournaments are probably the best way to increase your Poker skills without putting wagers. There is no entry fee to join an online freeroll tournament even though you have a chance of winning real money. The prizes at offer are usually lower than those in paid tournaments but even so, most online Casinos offer them with decent prizes and good value. You should do some research as to which of them offers the biggest prize pools before playing in one of them.

They offer much better game quality because players aren't just pushing all-in every hand. Players have the chance of actually winning something and are thus more likely to therefore think twice before making a move. Quite simply, play-money games can be referred to as just card games whereas freeroll tournaments offer real Poker. When people are playing play-money games, they push in chips with any holding of their choice. They are thus more interested in seeing the cards on the table and see if they can win something.

Freeroll tournaments are a great way to improve your playing skills as well. You are playing with people who are serious about winning and do not just push all-in every hand they have.

It allows you to play real Poker for free. Although you need to wait till a tournament starts, they offer real enjoyment, strategic game play from players and a chance to win big. The mere fact that you can win real money at freeroll makes it a very attractive option in comparison to play-money games. The game play is also much better than in play-money games.

Advanced Poker Strategy for Tournaments - How To Move Beyond Playing Only Your Cards

The beauty of Poker is that it is easy to learn but almost impossible to fully master. A player who has learned the basics of Poker strategy including starting hand selection, the various kinds of odds and table position looking at advanced poker strategy tips and information needs to cover many areas. This article suggests 5 advanced poker strategy areas that can improve any player's poker skills.

Advanced Poker Strategy Area #1 - Game Theory

Game theory is actually a branch of mathematics which looks at situations where 2 or more people have conflicting interests. It can be applied to poker in many ways. The most common example is 'Optimal Bluffing Strategy' in which you aim to randomize your bluffs in a way that is 'unexploitable' by opponents. This advanced poker strategy involves making your bluff frequency exactly the same as the odds your opponent receives to call the final bet.

Advanced Poker Strategy Area #2 - The Independent Chip Model (ICM)

ICM is a model which gives a tournament player's chip stack a dollar value based on prize pool distribution and the stacks of remaining players. It is then used to calculate your true risk - in terms of dollars not chips - when making a decision during play. This advanced poker strategy is commonly used in Sit and Go tournaments but can be equally useful in multi-table poker tournaments.

Advanced Poker Strategy Area #3 - Heads-Up Poker Play

There are actually 2 advanced poker strategies designed for heads-up play. Both are used at the end of tournaments and rely on math to ensure that an opponent has no numerical way to exploit you. The first is known as the SAGE system and the second 'Nash-Equilibrium'. Becoming an expert in these systems will help you reach that number one spot - where the big payout is!

Advanced Poker Strategy Area #4 - Stack Size Flexibility and Inflection Points

Made famous by Dan Harrington the concept of 'M', zones and inflection points is a must for players learning advanced poker strategy for tournaments. You can calculate your 'M' score at any point during a tournament by dividing your chips by the blinds and antes. This score is then used to assign a 'zone' which dictates your strategy as you travel through inflection points (changes between zones).

Advanced Poker Strategy Area #5 - Rail-Birding The Online Pros

Watching the professional online tournament players at work is a great way to pick up advanced poker strategy tips. Effective rail-birding involves analyzing the hand as a whole rather than just the cards in play. Stack-sizes and reads are just two of the many things to watch out for.

Playing Online Poker - What Is 'VPIP'?

VPIP in online Poker games stands for 'Voluntarily Put Into Pot'. Expressed as a percentage, this term shows how many starting hands an individual player is willing to play from all positions at the table. This term started as a statistic in a widely used software tool known as 'Poker Tracker', and has now entered the main stream of strategy discussion - usually in the context of how loose or tight an individual opponent plays before the flop.

A Poker player with a high VPIP is one who likes to be involved in a lot of pots. Conversely someone with a lower score is often waiting for the very best starting hands before parting with any chips. The actual numbers will depend on the game played and whether the table is 6-handed or 10-handed. As a rule of thumb a score of >35% can be considered 'loose' and less than 18% can be considered 'tight'.

When using this term to assess opponents it is important to consider that the information gained is limited to the amount of hands played before the flop. The 'Voluntarily Put In Pot' score does not actually tell you anything about how an opponent plays their starting hands. Consider the following example of 2 players:

- #1 - Limps into a lot of pots and calls small raises regardless of position at the table.

- #2 - Folds when there are other players in the pot already except with strong hands but will always raise when the hand is folded around to him in any of the last 3 positions.

It is possible that both of these players have an identical VPIP score, yet the way they play hands is completely different. Here the important factor is how aggressively the hands were handled. There are 2 more important statistics which describe this characteristic, 'Pre Flop Aggression' and 'Aggression Factor'. Together with the VPIP score this information allows you to build a detailed picture of your opponents tendencies - and correctly adjusting to these is the key to winning while playing online poker.

Poker Bankroll: How Much do You Need to Start Playing With?

Any player must at first ask himself the question: "How much should I invest in this?" Any player that wants to start playing for real, because if you are just playing for fun you can have any bankroll, anything you can afford and if you win it's for the best, but if you lose, you don't have to worry about it. So, if you want to become a serious Poker player you'll have to take inconsideration many things. The first thinks you have to reflect upon are related to your gaming style, what games they like playing, where are they playing these games and their budget and reason for playing Poker.

Experts calculated some possible bankrolls and you might often find information that says a good bankroll to start with should be about 300 times higher that the value of one bet. So, if you want to play a $2-$4 game, then your bankroll must be something like $1,200, 300 times higher than the big bet. This can work, but it is too general. You must really look into your playing style. If you are a solid player, that thinks every hand and folds often when needed, then you probably don't need that much. If, on the other hand you are rather loose and play almost all the hands, then you will be involved in many pots and you might need more.

The type of games played is also an important factor. If you play draw Poker then you need less money than in triple draw. It's just some calculus and the solution is obvious. Also so me games have more betting rounds that other games and these games require an extended bankroll.

Also, when you play no limit holdem this limit is way too little. If the big blind of the game is $3, the bankroll of $900 is way too little for this type of game. Here you can find your self in the situation where you have to bet $50 at a time, and just dividing you can clearly see that if raised and re-raised the bet can be pretty high and you can end up loosing all the bankroll in just a few sessions. The key for an appropriate bankroll is to make it fit into the statistic. The more games we can play the more chances to increase our bankroll we have. So if you only have $1,200 to spend for this, then do not choose a no limit game. It is for the best if you consider your financial possibilities also, because you don't want to end up playing just to win, being afraid at all times that you are going too lose your bankroll and be broke. Playing scared will only make you lose, so don't do it.

Poker Strategy Answers - Playing Ace Jack

In our continuation of Poker strategy answers today I will be addressing how to play Ace Jack correctly. Now to do so we're going to have to reclassify Ace Jack from a strong hand to a drawing hand. Why, you ask? Let's find out.

When you raise with Ace Jack at a tight table, regardless of position, you are only doing one thing: allowing your opponents to mask the strength of their hand. If the table is tight the only people who will be calling you will be holding a pocket pair, ace queen, ace king, ace ten, or in the best case scenario ace something suited. In the majority of these cases you're behind by quite a bit, with the exception of the ace with a lower kicker.

Let's say for instance you raise pre-flop with Ace Jack and spike a Jack on the flop. An opponent whose hand strength has now been masked could easily be holding Queens, Kings, or Aces and is way ahead of you in the hand now. If you spike an Ace on the flop your opponent could out kick you with a Queen or a King. For these reasons we must reclassify Ace Jack to a drawing hand, in the same realm as Ace something suited and Ace Ten.

Now with drawing hands you are typically looking for two pair, trips, straights or flushes. Ace Jack suited is a much stronger drawing hand than Ace Jack, but regardless Ace Jack can still be a decent drawing hand. Now you won't be pushing as hard with a pair of jacks or a pair of aces but rather waiting for two pair or better.

If you understand how to read an opponent correctly, you may be able to save yourself some chips when your opponent out-kicks you. But if you opponent does indeed out kick you it will cost you part of your stack to find out. These types of bets are known as value bets and are executed to see where you currently stand in a hand. Typically value bets are about half the size of the pot or lower in an effort to see who will call, fold, or re-raise. In the case of a re-raise you know you're way behind. In the case of a call you have to look at how your opponent played previous hands on whether or not you should continue.

If you're up against an opponent who loves to trap or slow-play than betting on the turn is not advisable. If you're up against an opponent who loves to draw at hands than by all means you should bet the turn. As with any hand the way you should play it will be defined by the opponents currently in the hand with you.

Now if you're lucky enough to spike two pair or a straight you should also execute the value bet strategy. An opponent holding Ace King or Ace Queen will, in most cases, not put you on two pair and will either call along to the river or attempt to push you off of your hand. If they try to push you off your hand, come back over the top of them with a strong re-raise. This is the time when Ace Jack will really pay off for you, is heads up against someone who has paired their Ace with a great kicker but hasn't put you on two pair.

When it comes to pre-flop it's totally acceptable to fold Ace Jack to a raise. You're either dominated or drawing, and you don't want to be in either scenario with your chips in the pot. By playing Ace Jack as though you would a drawing hand, from middle to late position against smaller sized raises or with a smaller sized raise you increase the likelihood of picking up the pot.
